Bamboo Bicycle

06Jul09

Here are some pictures of my summer project: building a bamboo bicycle! I got a free junker bicycle from a bike shop here in Carmel.  The junker bicycle provides some key joints that can’t be made out of bamboo. The bamboo came from World Market here in Carmel. The bicycle is not done yet but a lot of progress has been made! Keep checking back for pictures of the final product!

And yes I know it’s set up like a womens bicycle…but the junker that we got for free was a womens road bicycle so the key joints we had to make the bamboo bicycle were womens thus making it the set up of a womens bicycle…oh well…It’s a bicycle made for about $20…you can’t be that!

That’s cool. I’ve seen bamboo bikes before. Is this legit bamboo?

  2. Awesome! I have only seen one other besides the commercial bicycles.

I want to build a bamboo bicycle cart. Where did you find good bamboo? None where I live and I don’t need five hundred dollars worth as some web sites want to sell me.

Dave – Yeah…it was pre-treated…meaning it was already dried out. I’m wanting to grow my own and then use that to make the bicycle.

Michael – I wouldn’t call this bamboo the greatest because it was already dried out and all that…but it’s still sturdy. I got three 6 foot bamboo from World Market for $20…it was more than enough than I needed to build the bike.

I was also going to build a cart for the bicycle…this website: http://www.carryfreedom.com/bamboo.html says if you send them an email they will send you plans for the trailer…I sent an email a few weeks ago but not answer from them…if you find out anything let me know!
